I was first shocked, then bemused and then ecstatic. 70 year old Ellen Basinki the Judge’s wife in Cleveland, bashed burglars off her home by whacking a Lagasse saucepan. Good for her. And good for Emeril too who quickly sent her a new set of cookware.

My passion for cooking sees me checking out Sur La Table’s events calendar here in Columbus for cookery programs. Its become a habit now to do at least one class each month. I am fond of learning new tricks and the broad range of skills and cuisines that are taught here are wonderful. Emeril’s largess made me scour the cookery schedule if the famed cook was featured in the near future.

Sure enough on June 23 Mike McCauley, our amiable instructor was doing the Grilling Inspired by Emeril’s New Grilling Book. It sounded a very good deal to me where I’d learn to kick my grilling up a few notches at the hands-on class inspired by Emeril Lagasse’s new book “Emeril at the Grill.”

Sur La Table as you might well know is a premier Kitchen Store that holds regular cooking programs to provide you with the opportunity to become a celebrity in your own kitchen. The menu too appears great - Grilled Fajita Panini with Chipotle Mayonnaise, Grilled Swordfish Kabobs with Fresh Herb Pesto Sauce, New York Strip with Stilton Walnut Butter, Watercress-Avocado-Mango Salad, Grilled Banana Splits.

Just about a quarter hour’s drive from my apartment in downtown Columbus, Sur La Table at New Bond Street is more than a hobby. Well known instructors from every region besides internationally renowned chefs come over to share their secrets. March 10th has me scheduled to attend the hands-on Healthy Cooking: Wok And Steaming class, yet again by Mike McCauley. Some things are life’s truest delights.
